  Alice's Stick Cookies

Alice Larse is living proof that you can pretty much do anything whenever you want to. She decided to learn to play the cello when she was in her 60’s, and at 70 she decided to start a cookie company. Alice's motto seems to be, “I like to learn something new every day!”

She confesses, "I probably should have started my cookie business earlier, but I wanted to play the cello first.”

Of course, it helped that her son David gave her a nudge and that for years family and friends had been begging for the cookie recipe. “When I was on vacation in 2000, David took some of the cookies to Draeger’s Market. Their enthusiasm convinced me that we could do this as a business.”

“I grew up working in my father’s small town grocery store. I like the people part of this business, so marketing and calling on stores is a pleasure. Developing and growing this cookie business has been a satisfying challenge and has added a whole new dimension to my life."

Every week, Alice and her five employees bake, cut and package the cookies. “The trickiest part is the cutting,” she explains. “If the cookies are too warm, they just collapse, like a too-warm cake. If they have cooled too much, they break. We have a great time together, talking and laughing, except when we’re cutting. That’s intense; it takes all our attention.”

Clearly, Alice is bringing pleasure to everyone who tastes these treats. “My stick cookies resemble biscotti, but have a completely different taste and texture. They’re moist, crumbly and very rich and buttery. They really do melt in your mouth!”
